How to Play
What is Formula Matchup?
Formula Matchup is a Head To Head style fantasy sports game based on the actual racing and outcomes of Formula 1! Each race week, players in a league work within a budget to form a virtual racing team and compete against one other league member with the goal of accumulating more points in the matchup to win that round. The team in their league with a solid win percentage that survives the playoffs at season's end will get to pour the champagne while standing on the coveted top step of the podium! (Champagne and podium not included.)
What sets Formula Matchup apart from other fantasy racing sites is here, any player, any round, has a chance to win and climb the standings. On platforms where the only goal is overall point total, just one low score can put you to the bottom of the leaderboard with little chance of recovery. Formula Matchup goes up a gear, making gameplay more fun and engaging for all participants the entire season!

You bet! You can start playing Formula Matchup at any point during the season. Just get some friends together to create your own private league or join a public one! Once your league is Activated, you'll matchup head to head for the next Grand Prix weekEND and continue through the rest of the season.
Public leagues are visible in the public league directory and anyone can join them without needing a join code. They're great for playing with the wider community.
Private leagues only appear to people who have the join code, making them perfect for playing with friends, family, or coworkers. You choose the visibility when creating your league.
Formula Matchup Plus is a paid tier of membership that unlocks a variety of extras for the user that chooses to partake! Some of these include the ability to create and manage your own leagues, access the private league Discord chat (beta), make use of extra scouting and quality-of-life tools, etc. Plus it gives you a chance to support further FM fun in the years to come! A one time fee of $12 gets you access for the whole year, though if you want to share a more sizable donation, we'd be so grateful!
First, one of your crew will need to sign up for FM Plus. With an FM Plus account, they can create a private league and will also become your League Director! Share the join code with your group and make sure it has 6, 8, 10 or 12 players before clicking "Activate" and starting the game!
Points are awarded based on the performance of your drivers and constructors during qualifying, sprint races, and the main race. Positions, fastest laps, positions gained/lost, and other achievements all contribute to your total score. Each league uses a scoring schema that defines the exact point values. For a detailed breakdown, check out our Scoring System page.
Depends on your account level! Basic memberships can create 1 team in 1 league per season. But if you are an FM Plus member, you can create up to 3 teams per season, each participating in a different league. This flexibility allows players to compete in multiple leagues simultaneously with different strategies and lineups for each.
Upgrades are special power-ups that can boost your team's performance. You have 6 different upgrades available throughout the season, but each can only be used once. To use an upgrade, select it during team setup before a race weekEND. Different ones offer various advantages like unlimited transfers, score multipliers, and the ability to avoid negative points. Upgrades are great, but they may not be used once your league's playoffs begin. Read more about all 6 in detail in our Player Guide.
