About Formula Matchup
I was 3½ years old when I first laid eyes on a Formula 1 car. It was the first year they raced on the streets of Long Beach, California. It was just a glimpse, but it was more than enough to keep racing a passion of mine for over 50 years. Though I tried to ignore it in my youth, it came back into my life later — along with fantasy sports.
Sure, fantasy football is great, but why were there so few options for fantasy racing? There were a few things here and there, but nothing that played the game the way we wanted to. No matter — I’ll just make my own.
So I did.
For years, my family played in a 10-team league while I “kept score” using Excel, some duct tape, and a few paperclips. (Okay… maybe just Excel.)
Then F1 started to rev its marketing engine a bit higher (thanks, Liberty Media!), but even their official offering lacked what we liked most about our league.
Head-to-head matchups were the secret ingredient we wanted.
We even tried the official game for a few years, but the idea that one or two bad races could knock you out of championship contention meant the motivation to keep playing disappeared for most teams toward the end of the season.
Formula Matchup is my attempt to bring head-to-head competition into the fantasy racing world. I hope you — and your family, if they’re fans too — enjoy the rivalries that await.
